Black Rock City swings about 25°C in a single day. Afternoons sit around 32–38°C and push past 40°C in a hot year, with no shade and no filter on the sun. I know these photos aren't very BM glam — but this was 2013, my first festival ever, in a different country. We'd booked an RV, then were naive enough to tell them we were going to Burning Man, so they wouldn't rent it to us and we ended up camping and sleeping in a car. My friend Beck lost her phone on the last day, classic. My friend Mic fell in love with a Canadian and moved across the world in pursuit of her. People felt so sorry for us that they gave us cooked food, because all we'd brought was Gatorade, M&Ms and two-minute noodles — I'd heard M&Ms were desert food since they don't melt. It's more fun if you don't take it seriously and don't spend so long mentally orchestrating the perfect burn.

Everything in the Burning Man Capsule is reversible bamboo — dust sheds off it, and it's simple enough to layer ornaments, jewellery and lights over for a full look, then strip back at 4am.
